Black History Quiz

We do Black History all year, not especially in Black History Month. At some point this school year you will study ancient African and Asian civilisations (Years 7, 8 and 9); the 2,000 year old history of Black people in Britain (Year 7); the transatlantic slave trade, resistance and abolition (Years 8 and 9); Black pirates and Black radical thinkers and leaders in the 18th and 19th century (Year 8); Black Londoners in past centuries (Year 7); the British Empire in India and Africa (Year 9); African, Caribbean and Indian soldiers in the two world wars (Years 7 and 9); the Black Civil Rights movement in the USA (Year 10).

But to celebrate Black History Month (a bit late!) we are running a quiz for all classes in years 7, 8 and 9. Your History teacher will put you in teams of about 4, mixed to give every team an equal chance of winning. The quiz will happen in the middle of November. The team in each year group with the best score will get a prize.

All the questions in the quiz will be based on information linked to below. The topics will be:

Ancient African kingdoms.

Resistance to the Slave Trade.

Key black figures in British history.

When you have your lesson in an ICT room your teacher will tell you your teams.

Your team needs to collect information and make notes. All notes you make will be allowed during the quiz, but no print outs and no cut and paste. After reading a source, write down abiout five main bullet points.

(a) Read the links on ancient African kingdoms:

(b) Read about slave resisters

(c) Read about historical Black Britons
